Small Fusee Mantel Clock by Jump....

A delightfully small and well proportioned mantel clock with Maple veneer and Tulipwood edge inlay. High quality and small English mantel clocks from the late 19th century are quite unusual. The Jump brothers were very successful Clockmakers and also originated from the Vulliamy workshops.

The Nelson Longcase Clock.....

You will see from the images that Nelson's Tomb is depicted in the arch of this longcase clock as can be seen below St Paul's Cathedral on a modern day tour. Also depicated is Brittania who for many years has been asscociated with our Royal Navy. Although Nelson inspired objects are not rare it is quite unusual to find him depicated on a longcase clock. The eagle eyed amongst you may have also noticed two original mistakes on the dial. Firstly the place name is spelt without an 'E' and secondly where you would normally see a V for 5 o'clock there is an X.

An interesting oak longcase clock from the County of Wiltshire but with a Maritime connection.

The 8 day duration movement striking the hours on a bell. The painted arch dial showing Roman numerals, Arabic minutes, seconds and date. The corners with delicately painted roses and foliage and the arch with a scene depicting the memory of Admiral Lord Nelson. Britannia stands next to Nelsons tomb and alongside her lay a cannon and a mast and sail. Also with matching blued steel hands. The slender oak case with a long trunk door with flowers to the inlaid oval. The base standing on bracket feet and also inlaid with an oval design to the centre. The hood with plain oak pillars topped with Corinthian capitals and Doric capitals to the base. The swan neck top with unusual grooved vertical lines, a central brass spire finial and brass paterea.

Note: Horatio Nelson died on 21st October 1805 at the Battle of Trafalgar on the now famous ship HMS Victory. After a long and active career in the Royal Navy he died a National hero and was given a State Funeral. At this period there were all sorts of objects made to celebrate his life. Some of them not so well made and also made in huge quantities. To find a depiction of Nelson on a longcase clock is quite rare. Richard Pinnell was baptised in Malmesbury Abbey on 20th July 1779 and died only 39 years later in 1818. This clock will be sold with a model of HMS Victory and also a copy of a Trafalgar Poster issued in 1805.

Rocking Ship Longcase Clocks from the 18th century are quite simply very rare. There have been many poor copies made over the years but both the background and the ship are all completely original on this clock. To think that this ship has been bobbing along for over 200 years in the arch of the dial is quite amazing!

More to follow this week....

Our latest Regulator longcase clock will be arriving this week by Brysons of London. Featuring deadbeat escapement, maintaining power, offset weights, Mercurial Pendulum and a glazed trunk door. Also new to the website will be a very small balloon shaped mantel clock by Jump of London who were the successors to Benjamin Lewis Vulliamy.

Lapada Object of the Year.....

Our very impressive and high quality longcase clock by Charles Cabrier of London has been accepted into the presitgious Lapada Object of the Year. Please see below for full details and for the voting procedure.

An excellent example of Cornish Clockmaking with Rocking Ship Automata.

The 8 day duration movement striking the hours on a bell. The brass dial with separate silvered brass chapter ring, brass spandrels and a very well engraved silvered brass centre of a seascape, tower and ruined castle. Also featuring seconds and date aperture. The arch with an original Rocking Ship feature again with seascape background and makers name.

The mahogany case with a long trunk door with a shaped top and elaborate starburst inlay to the centre. The base with bookmatched mahogany veneer, single plinth and shell inlay. The hood with brass capped angle pillars and a glazed hood door. The flat top with typical West Country fretwork.

Note: Thomas Olive of Penryn was not only a Watchmaker but also a Silversmith and Gunsmith. He is listed as working in Lower Street in 1768. Original brass dial Rocking Ship longcase clocks are now exceedingly rare. This is a very fine provincial example.
