Mahogany Stick Barometer by Ortelli & Co of London

An excellent example of an early 19th century mahogany stick barometer.

The rectangular silvered brass scale is calibrated from 27" to 31" and features a sliding vernier with a brass pointer and typical weather indications from Stormy to Very Dry.  The integral thermometer is calibrated from 10º to 90º Fahrenheit and is engraved from Freezing to Blood Heat. The scale is also very elaborately engraved with the makers name Ortelli & Co, London.

The slender mahogany case has an exposed mercury tube with a turned mahogany cistern cover to the base.  The glazed access door is surmounted with an architectural pediment and a central brass finial.  The main trunk of the case is inlaid with ebony and boxwood stringing.

Note: A prolific family of Instrument Makers who appear to be working all over the country during the first half of the 19th century. This particular example is made by Joseph Ortelli & Co who worked at 20 Cross Street, Hatton Garden, London.
